Scott Hamilton update

back to Figure skating site

In 2004, Scott's doctors discovered a benign tumor in his brain and a decision to remove it was made in 2010 because it was feared that he would totally lose his vision if the tumor were not removed. On June 24, 2010, the tumor was removed in - what was thought to be - an uneventful surgery and Scott was reported by People Magazine to be "resting well".

But in November 2010, Scott was back in the hospital with an aneurysm and it came out that during the June surgery, an artery in his brain had been nicked.  They were able to stop the bleed however, an aneurysm developed days later.

Scott's aneurysm was clipped "non invasively" (said People Magazine) and Scott came through the surgery well.  However, Scott lost a large part of the vision in his right eye, which the article said was a common repercussion of that surgery.

Although Scott has come through many challenges well, this last one discouraged him a bit. The article states:

"I tried to stay positive through all this," says Hamilton, who years ago overcame testicular cancer and a pituitary gland tumor. "But in back of my mind, I felt, 'I'm getting knocked down and I'm not sure if I can get back up.' "

Scott did bounce back however, and managed to raise 1.1 million dollars for his benefit organization, Scott Cares on November 6 2010.  In the hospital, Scott entertained some friends with his head wrapped in a catsup soaked bandage.  "I got him!" Scott gloated afterward.

Fans got to see him in a "Tribute to American Olympic Medalists" Special in December. It's unclear if this was filmed before or after the aneurysm.

Scott, who won the Olympic gold medal in 1984, remains one of the all time heros of American figure skating.
