Prevailence of obesity vs deaths from diabetes, stroke and heart disease

Obesity has doubled in adults since 1960 and yet deaths from diabetes have risen but not significantly and deaths from heart disease and stroke (which obesity supposedly raises the risk for) have SIGNIFICANTLY gone down in incidence.  (From Scientific American, Jun 2005 "Obesity - an over blown epidemic?")
